Min-maxing

Optimizing a character by maximizing the most effective attributes while minimizing those considered less useful, even if it creates unrealistic or lopsided builds. This approach focuses on mechanical efficiency and exploiting system strengths for the biggest possible advantage. Min-maxing can improve performance in challenges but may clash with narrative balance or group expectations.

glossary

Miniature

A small figurine representing a character, creature or object used on a tabletop to visualize positioning and movement. Miniatures support tactical play by clarifying distances, line of sight and spatial layout. They’re also popular as collectibles, often painted to personalize a character’s appearance.

glossary

Battle mat

A flat, usually grid-marked surface used to map encounters and track character positions during tactical play. It helps visualize distances, movement and terrain features, making combat clearer and more precise. Battle mats come in many formats, from reusable wet-erase boards to printed maps tailored to specific locations.

BBEG – Big Bad Evil Guy

The primary antagonist of a campaign, often serving as the ultimate threat or mastermind behind major conflicts. This figure drives long-term tension, shapes the story’s stakes and provides a climactic challenge for the party. The BBEG typically embodies the central themes or dangers the campaign explores.

glossary

BNG – Bitter Non Gamer

A disengaged participant who sits at the table without actively playing and expresses frustration or negativity toward the game. They often criticize decisions, story elements or the GM’s approach while contributing little themselves. The term describes someone whose resentment or disinterest undermines the group’s enjoyment rather than supporting the play experience.

Buff

A disengaged participant who sits at the table without actively playing and expresses frustration or negativity toward the game. They often criticize decisions, story elements or the GM’s approach while contributing little themselves. The term describes someone whose resentment or disinterest undermines the group’s enjoyment rather than supporting the play experience.

glossary

Metagaming

Using information that the character cannot reasonably know, but the player does, to influence in-game decisions. It often appears when out-of-character knowledge affects tactics, choices or reactions during a session. Metagaming can break immersion and distort narrative stakes, since actions stop reflecting the character’s perspective and start reflecting the player’s external awareness.

glossary

Non-Player Character (NPC)

Any character controlled by the Game Master rather than the players, serving roles such as allies, quest-givers, rivals or everyday inhabitants of the world. NPCs help shape the setting, deliver information and create dramatic tension through their actions and personalities. They act as narrative tools that bring the game world to life.

glossary

One-Shot

A self-contained RPG session or short adventure designed to begin and end within a single meeting. It focuses on concise storytelling, quick character setup and clear goals that can be resolved in one sitting. One-shots are used to test new systems, play between campaigns or offer a low-commitment, high-impact gaming experience.

glossary

Party

The group of player characters who adventure together, combining their abilities and perspectives to overcome challenges. The party functions as the game’s central team, sharing risks, resources and narrative arcs. Its dynamics often shape the tone, strategy and emotional core of a campaign.
